Desk 04 · Contract Work
Contract work with defined scope, honest terms and no surprises
A contract engagement is only as good as the document behind it. When scope, deliverables, change requests and payment terms are written down before day one, contract work can be the cleanest arrangement in hiring. When they're not, it's where most disputes start.
This section covers the practical side of hiring and working as a contractor. We look at statements of work, milestone payments, notice periods and how to handle scope that grows mid-project. We also cover how to extend or end a contract without burning the relationship, and what a fair handover includes.
Contract rules vary a lot by jurisdiction. Worker classification in the United States, off-payroll rules in the United Kingdom and contractor regulations across Canada, Europe and Australia all differ, and some change often. We separate general good practice from anything that depends on local law, and we point to official sources where we can. None of it is legal advice, so check with a qualified adviser before you sign.
This desk is written for hiring managers, agency owners, procurement teams and contractors themselves.
